The One Trick Party Pony

Once I’m on to a good idea I find it hard to let go.  I will possibly be making my children piñatas out of cardboard boxes for their 40th birthdays.  All my youngest wanted for his 7th birthday was a few friends over to watch a movie, bless his little homebody socks.  His movie of choice was Despicable Me 2, one I have a soft spot for myself.  The obvious choice for hitting repeatedly with a large bat was the Purple Minion.  It also just happened to be an easy shape to make out of a cardboard box.  I used with the same basic structure as the Ghast Pinata I made for his big brother's birthday.  The original design of which coming from Domestic Femme.  It was a big hit (excuse the pun) with the little kids but it was lucky my older and stronger nephews were there or we would have been there all night.

I'm hardly a cake baker let alone a decorator, but do enjoy designing my bodge jobs.  It's lucky I like the homemade look, or that's what I tell myself anyway.  I thought that the Despicable Me mystery bags available would contain some pretty great things to go on the cake.  I spent considerable time in the shop massaging each one to try to work out what was inside.  As you can see, I got it mostly right.  I figured that the scene with Minions on a beach would be far easier than any evil mastermind's underground lair, so here it is.

I spread blue and yellow butter cream on the cake for the ocean and beach and let the Birthday Boy get on with the rest.  I did not however anticipate how many tantrums a broken cocktail umbrellas could cause.  Am I looking back with rose-tinted glasses at the cocktail umbrellas of the 80's or are they not as well made as they once were?  Although what can you expect when they were 9 for $1, I dread to think the conditions they were made in.  Cheap cocktail umbrellas causing misery throughout their short lives.  We had to ban the "U" word in our house.

The party bags looked great, especially all lined up together before the kids got their greasy mitts on them.  However not only did I forget to take a decent a photo of them when I made them but I panic took this industrial vibe party bag photo as the sun was going down today.  Its not easy being a mum!
