You've got to start somewhere

My almost-trusty machine

I've wanted to start a blog about my learning to sew for a long time but for some reason today is the day it's happening.  Probably because I have heaps of other boring jobs to do.

I've always loved altering clothes and charity shopping (as I grew up in England calling it).  About five years ago I inherited my Grandma's old sewing machine and started to try to construct clothes from scratch.  Some of the things I've made I've been very proud of, some have made me laugh and some I've just sworn at.  I love the process of dress making as it forces me to slow down, concentrate and try to do things as perfectly as I can rather than settle for good enough as is my habit.  I find it very meditative.

I'm not particularly good at dressmaking,  and don't have great fine motor skills.  I know a fair bit and can make quite a few different things just not with particularly good technique or skill.  It's been my ambition to get better for a long time, so what better motivation then a publicly available diary to shame me into getting on with it.

I am also very uncomfortable with the the cycle of fast and disposable fashion than has become the norm in the world of clothing manufacture.  My personal antidote to this was taking 6 months to make a dress.  I've got 2 kids and lots of small commitments that mean I rarely have big stretches of time to dedicate to dressmaking.  I'm working on the principle that a couple of short evenings a week is better than one afternoon a season.

Hopefully below are some photos of things I've made over the last five years.  Also hopefully within the week will be another post about my current project, only time will tell.

Curtains that went well thanks to the step-by-step help from my Mum

The shorts that taught me its always better to use a pattern, especially if you've got no idea what you're doing

Sleeping bag went well, rotating the photo, not so much
